Former Congresswoman Mia Love, a trailblazing political figure, has died at the age of 49 following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Love’s family announced her passing on March 23, 2025, reflecting on her profound influence and the memories she left behind.
In their statement on social media, the family expressed, ‘With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family.’
Love made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress. Diagnosed with glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, in 2022, her health took a turn in early 2025 when treatment ceased to show effectiveness. Love had been vocal about her experience, sharing with followers her intention to cherish time with her loved ones.
Born to Haitian immigrants in Brooklyn, New York, Mia’s journey exemplified the American Dream. She began her political career in 2003 on the Saratoga Springs City Council and served as mayor before successfully campaigning for Congress in 2014, where she represented Utah.
Love’s political tenure was marked by her focus on banking regulation and immigration, and she was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Her tenure was not without challenges; she narrowly lost reelection in 2018 amid polarizing moments in national politics.
Despite her political losses, Love continued to advocate for her beliefs and worked as a political commentator post-Congress. In recent communications, she expressed her desire for a future she wouldn’t personally witness, sharing her hopes for the America she loved.
In an poignant open letter written shortly before her passing, Love noted, ‘In the end, I hope that my life will have mattered and made a difference for the nation I love and the family and friends I adore.’
She is survived by her husband, Jason Love, and their three children. As tributes pour in, Mia Love will be remembered not only for her political achievements but as an inspiration to many in the fight for diversity and representation in American politics.
