Vermont Men’s Soccer Claims Historic NCAA Championship Title

The University of Vermont men’s soccer team has made history by winning its first national championship in a team sport, defeating Marshall University 2-1 in a thrilling overtime match on Monday night.
Maximilian Kissel scored the decisive goal just 4:53 into the first overtime period, securing the program’s first national title. “It was an incredible moment for our team and the entire university,” Kissel said, reflecting on the significance of the victory.
Vermont finished the season with a record of 16 wins, 2 losses, and 6 draws, making them the first America East team to reach a national title game in team sports.
Marshall, who was seeking their second national title in three appearances, started strong, with Tarik Pannholzer scoring in the 57th minute. However, Vermont quickly equalized in the 81st minute through Marcell Papp, setting the stage for a dramatic overtime.
Kissel’s game-winning goal came after he intercepted a long cross from Zach Barrett, showing remarkable skill and composure under pressure. “I just reacted instinctively and knew I had to get that goal for my team,” Kissel added.
This win marks a monumental achievement not just for the men’s soccer program but for the entire University of Vermont, which has celebrated six national championships in skiing but had not achieved a team championship until now.
As the players celebrated with their fans, the atmosphere was electric, filled with cheers and emotions as they acknowledged their historic accomplishment. “This is just the beginning; we hope to keep building on this success in the future,” Coach Jesse Cormier stated in a post-match interview.
