Tsunami Warning Issued for California and Oregon After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake

SAN FRANCISCO (TNND)— A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas of California and Oregon after a major earthquake occurred offshore on Thursday morning. The Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, confirmed that a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 was recorded, approximately 62 miles west of Ferndale, California.

The warning indicates that a tsunami with potential significant inundation dangers is either imminent or already happening. ‘Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest,’ stated the warning issued by officials.
