Liberty Bowl Preview: Texas Tech vs. Arkansas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Texas Tech Red Raiders are gearing up for an exciting Liberty Bowl matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday. However, the team will face the challenge of being without several key players, including revered running back Tahj Brooks and cornerback Bralyn Lux.
In a recent announcement, Tech athletics confirmed that Brooks, Lux, and wide receiver Josh Kelly have opted out of the game for personal reasons. It is worth noting that Kelly had already chosen to prepare for the upcoming NFL draft.
Injuries have also taken a toll on the roster. Defensive end Sam Carrell (foot), defensive tackle Quincy Ledet (knee), linebacker Bryce Ramirez (lower leg), and defensive back Devynn Cromwell (shoulder) are all expected to miss the game, along with quarterback Behren Morton, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.
Head coach Joey McGuire mentioned that Brooks was actively participating in practices but was uncertain about his involvement in the game, calling it a “50-50” situation before the announcement of his absence.
Brooks concludes his Texas Tech career with a school-record 4,557 rushing yards, surpassing former record holder Byron Hanspard’s mark of 4,219 yards, which did not account for postseason statistics before 2002.
The Red Raiders are expected to turn to their young talents, with true freshmen J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey likely stepping in as the top backup running backs after a successful regular season.
Arkansas, facing its own roster challenges, will be without several stars, including leading receiver Andrew Armstrong and team rushing leader Ja’Quinden Jackson, both of whom declared for the NFL draft. Despite the attrition, Arkansas boasts a rich history in the Liberty Bowl, aiming to secure a victory.
The matchup will mark the first time these two teams face off in a bowl game. Both Arkansas and Texas Tech aim to carry momentum into 2025, as they navigate roster changes.
