South Florida Bulls Capture Victory in Historic Hawaii Bowl Against San Jose State

HONOLULU (AP) — In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, the South Florida Bulls secured a thrilling 41-39 victory over the San Jose State Spartans on Tuesday night at the Hawaii Bowl, marking a significant moment in college football history as the longest FBS bowl game since the advent of overtime rules in 1996.

With tense twists in the game, South Florida took the lead in the fifth overtime when quarterback Bryce Archie connected with Keshaun Singleton over the middle, showcasing confidence and precision when it mattered most. The victory was sealed when linebacker Mac Harris batted down a crucial pass intended for Justin Lockhart in the end zone, leading to jubilation on the Bulls’ sideline.

This game was not just a record-setter but also a pivotal moment for both teams’ recent histories. South Florida’s win improved their record to 7-6, marking their second consecutive bowl victory, a feat they hadn’t accomplished since the 2016-2017 season. On the other hand, San Jose State, also with a 7-6 record, was left searching for its first bowl victory since 2015.

Leading up to the overtime finish, the game was characterized by back-and-forth scoring. Trailing 27-24, South Florida initiated a thrilling final drive during regulation. Archie executed two critical completions that propelled the Bulls into a position where John Cannon could tie the game with a 41-yard field goal, taking the match into overtime.

In the overtime periods, South Florida started strong with a 23-yard catch by Payten Singletary, followed by Ta’Ron Keith’s touchdown run, putting pressure on the Spartans. San Jose State responded vigorously, with quarterback Walker Eget guiding an 11-play drive culminated by a touchdown that evened the score.

Statistical highlights from the game showed Archie completing 24 of 35 passes for 235 yards, while Eget had a standout performance with 280 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Despite sacrifices from both sides, including injuries—most notably for SJSU who played without star receiver Nick Nash—the game showcased resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit.

As both teams move forward, South Florida’s victory is a reminder of the unpredictability and excitement that college football offers, promising an intriguing offseason for both programs.
