Tragic Loss of a Young Royal
Prince Frederik of Luxembourg has tragically passed away from a rare condition known as POLG mitochondrial disease, a genetic disorder that has impacted many lives. The young royal died at the age of 22, as announced by his family in a heartfelt statement shared on the POLG Foundation’s website.
His father, Prince Robert, expressed their sorrow, stating, ‘It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik.’
Understanding POLG Mitochondrial Disease
The POLG Foundation describes the disease as a genetic disorder that deprives the body’s cells of energy, causing progressive dysfunction and failure of multiple organs. Unfortunately, there is no known cure or effective treatment for this condition.
This disorder, which affects approximately one in 5,000 individuals, severely impairs mitochondrial function, leading to energy deficits throughout the body. It is analogous to having a ‘faulty battery that never fully recharges.’ Frederik was born with this condition and was diagnosed officially at the age of 14.
A Legacy of Advocacy
Despite the challenges of his illness, Frederik made a significant impact. In 2022, he established The POLG Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness and funding research for the disease. His efforts included participating in medical trials that aided in the development of crucial research tools and partnerships.
His father shared, ‘Frederik worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the illness in a desperate bid to help others,’ reinforcing the importance of continuing his mission. The foundation has already funded $3.6 million for various research projects since its inception.
Reflecting on His Life
Family and friends remember Frederik for his compassion and humor even in difficult times. His father recalled Frederik’s final moments, stating, ‘Even in his last moments, his humor and his boundless compassion compelled him to leave us with one last laugh.’
