In a notable shift for Michigan’s quarterback depth, junior Jayden Denegal has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal shortly after the opening of the portal for underclassmen. The decision comes just hours after the Wolverines bolstered their roster by adding Kirk Herbstreit’s son.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5 and weighing 235 pounds, Denegal expressed heartfelt gratitude towards former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. In a statement shared on social media, he stated, ‘I have loved my time at the University of Michigan. I have had an opportunity to develop in one of the most iconic football programs in the nation.’
Throughout his three seasons with the Wolverines, Denegal participated in seven games and has two years of eligibility remaining. During his tenure, he has recorded a modest 50 passing yards and a touchdown.
Despite some struggles at the quarterback position for Michigan this season, Denegal did not see any playing time in 2024. The team had opted to rely on other players, including former walk-on Davis Warren and seventh-year veteran Jack Tuttle.
Denegal, a three-star recruit from Apple Valley, California, had an impressive high school career, amassing over 4,600 yards and 69 touchdowns. He joined the Wolverines as part of the 2022 recruiting class alongside Alex Orji.
In his farewell message, Denegal thanked Harbaugh and reflected on the experience, saying, ‘To Coach Jim Harbaugh, thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute and experience excellence with Team #144 and a national championship. I love Michigan. I love the Wolverines. Go blue!’
With Denegal’s departure, Michigan is left with three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and newcomer Jadyn Davis. The Wolverines are also set to welcome five-star recruit Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top prospect, into their program.
