Thanks to Friday evening’s expansion draft, the Golden State Valkyries finally have a team. The WNBA’s 13th team picked the following players, all of whom were left unprotected by their previous squads:

  1. Kayla Thornton (New York Liberty)
  2. Monique Billings (Phoenix Mercury)
  3. Julie Vanloo (Washington Mystics)
  4. Stephanie Talbot (Los Angeles Sparks)
  5. Cecilia Zandalasini (Minnesota Lynx)
  6. Temi Fagbenle (Indiana Fever)
  7. Kate Martin (Las Vegas Aces)
  8. Veronica Burton (Connecticut Sun)
  9. Maria Conde (Chicago Sky)
  10. Iliana Rupert (Atlanta Dream)
  11. Carla Leite (Dallas Wings)

The first eight players on this list played actively in the WNBA last season, while the last three players selected were rights to players who didn’t play during the 2024 season.

Winners

Natalie Nakase and the Valkyries

The success of the Valkyries is evident in their strategic picks during the expansion draft, setting them on the path to a promising 2025 season. The team, associated with the successful Golden State Warriors, has curated a roster that blends experienced veterans and young talents.

Head coach Natalie Nakase emphasized the importance of building a competitive culture: ‘We’re trying to build a very, very competitive culture. We’re going to play at a fast pace, and obviously, we’re going to shoot some threes.’ She set forth three non-negotiable characteristics for her players: ultra-competitiveness, high character, and a never-satisfied mindset.

Embracing Diversity

The roster is notably international. Six out of the eleven selected players were born outside the U.S., showcasing the global growth of women’s basketball. Coach Nakase’s strategy reflects this ambition with a diverse selection, which may signal a shift in league dynamics.

Kate Martin

At 24 years old, Martin is eager for a fresh start with the Valkyries. She expressed her gratitude towards her previous team and her excitement to build something new, stating, ‘This league is all about opportunity and you just need one shot.’

Losers

Kayla Thornton

While Thornton was part of a potential championship-contending Liberty team, her move to a new franchise may hamper her immediate championship goals, even if it presents new opportunities.

Connecticut Sun

The Sun faced a significant setback with the loss of key player Veronica Burton, who provided valuable depth and defense. Their decision to protect other roster players caused uncertainty as they head into the offseason.

Indiana Fever

Temi Fagbenle’s departure is another blow for the Fever, who risk losing stability within their roster amid evolving team dynamics. Despite this, Indiana’s focus appears to be on youth and development moving forward.
