Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

In a momentous ceremony, President Joe Biden conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom to acclaimed actor Denzel Washington and beloved star of the Back to the Future films, Michael J. Fox. This highest civilian honor in the United States recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to national interests, fostered world peace, or excelled in their respective fields.

Washington, who was recently baptized and received his minister’s license, and Fox were among 19 recipients honored this year. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established by John F. Kennedy in 1963, and it has since highlighted remarkable individuals across various disciplines.

During the ceremony, President Biden remarked on the honorees, stating the importance of their contributions, saying, ‘You defend the values of America, even when they’re under attack.’ This statement underscores the legacy and influence held by those receiving this prestigious award.

Fox, who retired from acting in 2020 due to health decline, received the award amidst cheers in the East Room of the White House. Washington, on the other hand, recently hinted at stepping away from screen acting following a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.

This year’s awards also recognized notable figures such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and musician Bono, highlighting a diverse range of contributions that transcend entertainment to touch upon important societal issues.

As President Biden noted in his remarks, ‘Together, you leave an incredible mark on our country, with insight and influence that can be felt around the globe.’ This sentiment captures the essence of the honor awarded to Washington and Fox, celebrating their exceptional careers and humanitarian efforts.
