The Detroit Lions are reeling after a significant injury to one of their star players. Running back David Montgomery suffered a torn MCL during the team’s recent home loss to the Buffalo Bills, according to reports from NFL Network. The injury could potentially sideline him for the rest of the season pending further testing.

In Sunday’s game, which ended with a score of 48-42 against the Bills, Montgomery had minimal impact, rushing only five times for four yards and catching four passes for 31 yards. His performance was cut short after he sustained the injury late in the second quarter and returned in the second half wearing a knee brace.

This injury represents a significant blow for the Lions, who have established themselves as one of the most potent offensive teams in the NFL this season, averaging 32.8 points per game. Montgomery had been pivotal to their success, forming a lethal one-two punch alongside fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

In fact, the Lions recently extended Montgomery’s contract to a two-year, $18.25 million deal, recognizing his contributions after a standout previous season where he recorded 1,015 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. So far this season, he has accumulated 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, alongside 36 receptions for 341 yards.

With Montgomery potentially out, Jahmyr Gibbs, who had already been making waves with his performance, is expected to see an increased workload. In his rookie season, Gibbs showcased his talent by rushing for 945 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns.

In addition to Montgomery’s injury, the Lions faced more adversity with defensive players Carlton Davis, Alim McNeill, and Khalil Dorsey also sustaining injuries during the game. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed concern, noting, ‘I don’t feel good about either one of those guys,’ in regard to some of the injured players. The Lions, currently seated at 12-2, will need to regroup as they prepare for their next match against the Chicago Bears.

As tests and evaluations of Montgomery’s knee continue, fans and teammates alike await more updates, holding onto hope for the star running back’s return.
