The most eventful portion of free agency is over, and every team across the league has made moves to improve or retool their rosters so far. The Washington Commanders played a significant role during this period, executing trades that brought in new talent.
General Manager Adam Peters re-signed key players, rewarding veterans like linebacker Bobby Wagner and tight end Zach Ertz for their contributions to the team’s success.
Trades brought in Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel Sr., whose skillsets complement the roster nicely. Additionally, free agents such as Javon Kinlaw and Will Harris joined the Commanders as replacements for notable departures including Jonathan Allen and Jeremy Chinn.
Despite these transactions, the Commanders still see areas for improvement as they prepare for the NFL Draft. Here are some of Peters’ most urgent remaining needs for the team.
1. Offensive Line
The Tunsil trade addresses multiple issues within the offensive line, not just the left tackle position. With Tunsil’s addition, sophomore Brandon Coleman may shift to guard or right tackle, depending on the strategy for Andrew Wylie.
Coleman displayed immense potential during his rookie season, and with Tunsil, the Commanders have a star player to bolster their armor. Tyler Biadasz has also proven himself worthy of maintaining his position as center, eliminating the need for replacement.
Unfortunately, Sam Cosmi is absent due to an ACL tear sustained in the divisional round, which could sideline him for most if not all of the 2025 season. The front office may consider selecting a player who can provide robust backup options on the interior during the upcoming draft.
2. Secondary
The Commanders’ defense struggled throughout 2024, largely attributed to a lackluster secondary. The departure of Jeremy Chinn to the Las Vegas Raiders added to these woes.
Though the team has secured Harris and cornerback Jonathan Jones on short-term contracts, their suitability for starting roles remains in question, implying that further upgrades are necessary.
While Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil lead the cornerback group, another addition could elevate the unit to elite status. Peters should prioritize drafting a safety or another cornerback early in the draft to enhance the defensive backfield.
3. Running Back
Fans appreciate the talents of Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler; however, the running back position warrants attention in the draft. Instances of an ineffective ground game hindered offensive balance, making it tough for rookie sensation Jayden Daniels.
The upcoming draft features a deep class of promising running backs. While notable talents like Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton may be out of reach, other Day 2 prospects could serve as valuable additions for the Commanders. If Hampton is available at the 29th pick, make no mistake—Peters ought to seize that opportunity. Other quality candidates include Quinshon Judkins, Kaleb Johnson, TreVeyon Henderson, and Cam Skattebo.
Conclusion
As the 2025 Draft approaches, the Commanders remain focused on strengthening their roster through strategic selections. With significant improvements already made, the upcoming draft represents a crucial opportunity to fill remaining gaps.
