Billy Joel, the legendary singer and songwriter, recently received a diagnosis that has prompted his early medical intervention and has sparked hope for his comeback. The 76-year-old musician was diagnosed with a neurological condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a disorder caused by an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

According to Dr. Marc Otten of Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists, ‘That’s a situation where there’s more fluid than there should be within the brain and that leads to an issue of the brain being stretched.’ Despite not being his treating doctor, Dr. Otten has extensive experience with NPH patients, many of whom have successfully recovered and resumed their passions.

Symptoms of NPH can include difficulties with cognition, walking, and bladder control. Dr. Otten noted that many people often overlook these symptoms as signs of aging, which can delay diagnosis and treatment. He emphasized the importance of early intervention, which typically involves the placement of a shunt device. This device helps drain excess fluid from the brain, reducing pressure and preventing further health deterioration.

Billy Joel’s health updates came after he canceled upcoming performances, including shows scheduled in Milwaukee through July 2026. His representatives shared a statement expressing the singer’s dedication to prioritizing his health: ‘This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.’

Billy Joel’s recent health troubles also included a stage fall at a concert in February 2025, which was caught on video and widely circulated. Fortunately, he did not sustain injuries and continued his performance, much to the applause of his fans. His publicist explained that, ‘While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.’

The diagnosis and subsequent health challenges have not dimmed Billy Joel’s resilient spirit. His team confirmed that he is undergoing treatment and is optimistic about regaining his full health. Fans and supporters continue to wish him strength and a swift recovery, hopeful that he will return to the stage soon.
