Teddy Bridgewater Returns: Veteran Quarterback Rejoins Detroit Lions as Playoffs Approaching

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is officially back with the Detroit Lions, marking a significant move for the team as they head into the playoffs. Coach Dan Campbell confirmed on Thursday that the 32-year-old player has come out of retirement to rejoin the roster.

Bridgewater, who previously announced his retirement in February after a brief stint with the Lions, spent the 2024 season coaching his former high school team, Miami Northwestern, to a state championship in Florida.

Originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Bridgewater brings a wealth of experience to the Lions. He has played for several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins, alongside his time with Detroit.

Throughout his career, he has accumulated a starting record of 33-32, with impressive statistics, including 15,120 yards passing, 75 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed for 844 yards and scored 11 times on the ground.

Bridgewater’s return will bolster the Lions’ quarterback room as they make a push for the top seed in the NFC playoffs, backing starter Jared Goff. Currently, Goff’s backup is Hendon Hooker, a third-round pick from the 2023 draft.

Coach Campbell emphasized in a press conference that Bridgewater will add ‘professionalism’ and experience to the team. He reassured fans that the signing does not indicate any dissatisfaction with Hooker, stating, ‘The playoffs are a different world,’ highlighting the need for veteran presence.

The Lions are set to face the San Francisco 49ers next, followed by a crucial game against the Minnesota Vikings to close out the regular season.
