Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, renowned for his pivotal role in steering India’s economic reforms, has died at the age of 92 in New Delhi. His passing marks the end of an era for Indian politics and economics.

Singh was reportedly admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences late on Thursday after experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Sadly, despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.

As the first Sikh to hold the office of Prime Minister, Singh served from 2004 to 2014. He was widely seen as the architect of India’s liberalization policies during his tenure as Finance Minister in the early 1990s. Singh’s approach led to a transformation of the Indian economy, fostering growth and integration into the global market.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating, ‘India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist.’ Modi noted Singh’s ‘extensive efforts to improve people’s lives’ during his tenure.

Singh’s legacy includes a landmark nuclear deal with the United States and significant strides toward enhancing India’s stature on the world stage. Despite facing scrutiny and criticism during his time in office, especially concerning corruption allegations against his ministers, he remained a figure of integrity and perseverance.

After leaving office, Singh maintained a relatively low profile, living quietly in New Delhi with his family. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, and his contributions to Indian politics and economics will not soon be forgotten.

Singh once remarked, ‘My life and tenure in public office are an open book. Serving this nation has been my privilege.’ His commitment to public service and economic reform is sure to leave a lasting impact on the future of India.
