Urgent Recall: Costco Organic Eggs at Highest Risk Level for Salmonella Contamination

A recall of organic eggs sold at Costco has been escalated to a Class I recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), reflecting the highest risk level for potential salmonella contamination. This classification means there is a reasonable probability that the recalled product could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death.

The affected organic, pasture-raised eggs, sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, were supplied by Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based company. The eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations across five states, including Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting on November 22, 2024.

Consumers should be aware that specific cartons included in the recall bear the codes 327 and P1363, with a “use by” date of January 5, 2025. The company indicated that these eggs were inadvertently packaged for retail distribution and reassured customers that additional controls and retraining measures have been implemented to prevent future occurrences.

Health experts warn that salmonella infections can lead to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms can range from fever and diarrhea to stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Customers who have purchased the recalled eggs are advised to discard them or return them to Costco for a full refund.

This recall is separate from another salmonella outbreak that recently caused 93 reported illnesses and 34 hospitalizations in 12 states, involving eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms, which are no longer available for sale.

For further information, customers can refer to the FDA’s recall notice and take appropriate action concerning their health and safety.
