Jeffrey Maddrey, the former chief of department for the New York City Police Department (NYPD), has resigned amid serious allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation of female officers, which several sources have reportedly deemed an “open secret.” Maddrey’s sudden resignation, announced late Friday night, follows a series of explosive sexual harassment claims against him.

Among the most prominent accusations is that of Lieutenant Quatisha Epps, who alleges that Maddrey coerced her into a sexual relationship in exchange for significant overtime benefits. Epps claims that Maddrey, 53, approached her with requests for sexual favors while she worked at NYPD headquarters. She revealed, “He wanted to have anal sex, vaginal sex, oral sex,” further stating, “He was always asking me to kiss his penis.” The context of harassment reportedly intensified after Maddrey’s promotion to chief in June 2023.

In her allegations, Epps described a troubling encounter where she stated that Maddrey “exposed himself” and physically compelled her, despite her pleas to stop. She recounted, “And I kept asking him, ‘Can you please stop? Then I stopped asking him to stop and asked him to just slow down.'” Epps claims their relationship resulted in sexual intercourse on multiple occasions, and she alleged that after their affair ended, Maddrey retaliated against her career, resulting in a 30-day suspension and questionable overtime assignments.

Maddrey’s legal representation denied the allegations, calling them “completely meritless,” and questioned the timing of Epps’ accusations. “She’s obviously drowning and in the deep end of the pool without a lifesaver. She wants to take down as many people as she can,” the attorney asserted.

This scandal unfolds alongside previous accusations against Maddrey from former officer Tabitha Foster, who alleged a similar pattern of abuse and coercion dating back to a relationship initiated while she was pregnant. Edwin’s past actions reportedly include retaliatory measures against Foster following her efforts to expose the alleged misconduct.

Additionally, Captain Gabrielle Walls has also accused Maddrey of making unwanted advances between 2015 and 2022, describing events where he attempted to kiss her at various police gatherings. In light of these allegations, Walls expressed a sense of relief following Maddrey’s resignation, emphasizing the need for transparency and justice for all involved.

The allegations have sparked significant scrutiny and calls for accountability within the ranks of the NYPD. Following Maddrey’s resignation, Chief of Patrol John Chell will temporarily assume his responsibilities. The unfolding situation raises critical questions regarding workplace harassment and the protection of employees within law enforcement agencies.
