Donald Trump Named TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year: A Historic Political Comeback

Trump’s Historic Political Comeback

Updated on: December 12, 2024 / CBS News

President-elect Donald Trump has been named TIME magazine’s Person of the Year, the magazine announced on Thursday. This accolade comes after Trump made history as only the second president in U.S. history to lose reelection and subsequently reclaim the White House four years later.

TIME remarked, ‘Trump’s political rebirth is unparalleled in American history.’ In a pre-announcement conversation with the magazine, Trump described his comeback journey as ’72 Days of Fury.’

This year, Trump surpassed a competitive shortlist of finalists that included figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, billionaire Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Celebratory Ringing of the Stock Exchange Bell

To commemorate this recognition, Trump is scheduled to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange—a first for him, according to the Associated Press.

Previous Recognition by TIME

This is not Trump’s first time holding the title of TIME’s Person of the Year; he was similarly honored in 2016 following his unexpected victory against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Trump’s recent re-election makes him the only president in American history to serve non-consecutive terms, a feat previously achieved by Grover Cleveland in the late 19th century.

A Notable Journey to Victory

TIME detailed Trump’s comeback through the tumultuous 2024 campaign, highlighting how he decisively cleared the Republican primary field, faced legal challenges in a New York courtroom, survived assassination attempts, and garnered support from notable figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk.

‘The election gave Trump political capital to address the sources of American discontent at home and abroad,’ TIME stated, raising questions on how he plans to utilize this newfound power.

Trump also indicated intentions to pardon individuals imprisoned for their roles in the January 6 Capitol attacks, declaring, ‘It’s going to start in the first hour… maybe the first nine minutes.’

A Legacy of Influence

Since its inception in 1927, TIME has awarded the title of Person of the Year based on individual influence and significance, rather than as a recognition of merit. Among recent winners include President Biden and Vice President Harris in 2020, Taylor Swift in 2023, and Barack Obama in both 2008 and 2012.

As the world watches Trump’s journey into this new chapter, his impact on the political landscape remains undeniable, with many looking forward to what lies ahead during his anticipated second term.
