A Major Outage Affects Facebook and Instagram Users Nationwide
On Wednesday afternoon, a substantial number of users across the United States reported issues with Facebook and Instagram, leaving many unable to access these popular social media platforms. Reports indicated that the outages began around 11:30 a.m. and peaked shortly after noon.
An outage tracker, Downdetector, confirmed these widespread reports, noting over 100,000 outages for Facebook and around 70,000 for Instagram at their busiest times. Issues also extended to WhatsApp, with around 10,000 users reporting problems.
Nature of the Outages
Many Facebook users encountered query errors when attempting to log in or browse. Such errors typically arise from difficulties in retrieving data from Meta’s servers and can be caused by various factors, including app and browser glitches, which often occur beyond the end user’s control.
By 2:30 p.m., the number of reported Facebook outages had dramatically decreased to approximately 17,000, while Instagram outages persisted at around 22,000.
Meta’s Response
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, acknowledged the issues, stating, “We are aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.” This statement reflects their commitment to resolving the outages swiftly.
Conclusion
This situation continues to affect many users. As Meta works to restore normal functionality, users are encouraged to remain patient. Updates will likely be provided as the company addresses the ongoing issues.
