Lance Bass, known for his time with NSYNC, recently opened up about his journey in Hollywood and how coming out as gay in 2006 profoundly impacted his career. Speaking on the December 5, 2024 episode of the podcast Politickin’, Bass reflected on losing a CW pilot shortly after his announcement, revealing the harsh realities he faced in the entertainment industry.

He came out as gay during an interview for People magazine, stating he felt ‘liberated’ after sharing a truth he had kept hidden for years, fearing it would jeopardize his career and that of his bandmates. He expressed, ‘It was a relief to finally be at peace with myself, my friends, family, and God.’

The Impact of Coming Out

Almost two decades later, Bass’s recollection of the moment he came out remains vivid. He stated, ‘I had a sitcom with The CW at the time, and we were about to shoot the pilot and this came out, and they were like, “We can’t do the show anymore.”’

“They have to believe that you’re straight to play a straight character,” he added, highlighting the restrictions faced by LGBTQ artists in Hollywood.

In addition to the canceled pilot, Bass mentioned that casting directors were hesitant to consider him for roles, making it evident that his sexuality was an obstacle in advancing his career. He acknowledged, ‘I lost everything as a result, forcing me to completely restart and rebrand.’

However, he drew some silver linings from his experience: ‘It was definitely a career killer. But, not long after that, I just saw a lot of success stories in entertainment… it’s actually a good thing to be yourself these days.’

Overcoming the challenges following his coming out, Bass has found success in a changing industry that is gradually becoming more accepting of LGBTQ representation. He noted that many who had once overlooked him have returned to admit their ‘really dumb’ mistakes and have since cast him in various roles.
