WrestleMania XL: A Year of Change and Controversy in WWE

Last year’s WrestleMania XL was one of the modern greats, with a slimmed-down match card delivering a number of classics, as well as the most explosive ending sequence in a generation.

Since that chilly weekend in Philadelphia, significant changes have occurred, marked by 11 Premium Live Events (PLEs) and more than a dozen title changes. As we reflect on the 40th annual WrestleMania, let’s take stock of who has thrived, who remains steady, and who has faced setbacks.

Who’s Up

Jey Uso

Last year’s event wasn’t a major highlight for former Bloodline member Jey Uso, whose one-on-one match with his twin brother fell flat. However, just a year later, Jey Uso is heading into WrestleMania 41 as a certified “arena-shaker” and a strong contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.

This past year has certainly been a rollercoaster for the former “Right Hand Man.”

Dom Mysterio

Once considered a top contender for most improved wrestler, Dom Mysterio had a lackluster showing last year. However, his trajectory has significantly changed, and he heads into WrestleMania 41 with opportunities for an Intercontinental Championship amid a thrilling four-way match.

Bianca Belair

Despite a year of shifting from the main title scene, Bianca Belair has shown her exceptional skills once again, rising to the top of the women’s roster with a triumphant statement victory at Elimination Chamber. She enters ‘Mania in a strong position and is favored to reclaim her championship.

CM Punk

Although CM Punk didn’t wrestle at the previous WrestleMania, he played a pivotal role in setting the stage for a top rivalry with Drew McIntyre. Since then, Punk has excelled, proving himself as a star performer and now has the chance to headline WrestleMania, fulfilling a long-held ambition.

Who’s Down

Damage CTRL

Sidelined with injuries, Damage CTRL has struggled significantly. Nevertheless, their impact was notable over the past year, especially with Bayley’s transformation into a babyface costing some of the team’s momentum.

Drew McIntyre

After facing humiliation last year, McIntyre showed promising work but has recently lost momentum due to uninspired booking. Once seen as a Universal Championship contender, McIntyre now finds himself in a less than thrilling rematch against Damian Priest.

Austin Theory

A once-promising star, Austin Theory has noticeably faded from the spotlight following an impressive win against John Cena at WrestleMania 39. At 27, he still has ample time to shine, but his absence from this year’s event raises eyebrows.

Who’s Stayed the Same

Cody Rhodes

After an emotional victory at WrestleMania XL, Cody Rhodes returns to the event facing the threat of losing his title to John Cena. Questions loom about whether Rhodes has maintained his momentum as a champion.

Randy Orton

Randy Orton remains a fan favorite, but he is also on the lookout for a major match that can propel him back into title contention.

Gunther

Following a notable title loss last year, Gunther quickly regrouped to capture the King of the Ring and subsequently the World Heavyweight Championship. He now prepares to face Jey Uso, positioned as a key player in this year’s WrestleMania.
