In a ceremony rich with history and tradition, golf legends Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson officially began the 2025 Masters Tournament at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club on April 10. Gathering a devoted crowd of fans, the honorary starters fueled excitement for the tournament, marking another year of their celebrated participation.
This year marks the fourth consecutive appearance for the trio, with Nicklaus first joining the ceremony in 2010, followed by Player in 2012 and Watson in 2022. The combined accolades of these golfers include 11 green jackets and over 35 major titles, showcasing their legendary status in the sport.
The event kicked off with Player, 89, humorously noting, ‘It gets a little more narrow every year’ as he took his first drive off hole No. 1. Chairman of Augusta National, Fred Ridley, warmly encouraged Nicklaus to take his turn, to which the 85-year-old quipped, ‘It would be mine if I don’t fall down trying to poke it into the grass.’
As the crowd roared with applause, Watson, at 75, delivered the final tee shot, bringing the ceremony to a close. Ridley concluded with a spirited declaration, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, the 2025 Masters Tournament is now officially underway. Enjoy the tournament.’
This year, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is favored, seeking to become only the second player in history to win three green jackets in four years. He will commence his rounds alongside notable players such as Justin Thomas and Jose Luis Ballester. Other top golfers, including Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, and Bryson DeChambeau, are also set to compete, promising an electrifying tournament ahead.
