In a tragic turn of events, Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her home in Alexandria on the morning of March 23. She was just 43 years old. Police arrived at the scene after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman around 9:18 a.m. and later confirmed Aber’s identity.

Aber was appointed to her prominent role in 2021 by President Joe Biden and worked diligently until her resignation in January 2025. Her sudden death has left colleagues and friends in shock, and the circumstances surrounding it are currently under investigation by the Alexandria Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia, which will determine the cause and manner of death.

In a heartfelt tribute, Erik Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, expressed his sadness: ‘We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber.’ He described her as ‘unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor,’ emphasizing her contributions to the legal field and the community.

Throughout her career, Aber was known for her commitment to justice and collaboration across law enforcement agencies. She began her legal journey as an assistant U.S. attorney in 2009, quickly rising through the ranks due to her professionalism and dedication. Aber’s notable work included high-profile cases and efforts in public corruption, cybersecurity, and human trafficking.
