Winter Storm Causes Disruption Across Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. – A late winter storm has swept across Kansas, bringing with it winds exceeding 70 mph and whiteout conditions in various regions, resulting in major disruptions on highways and in local communities.

The storm has led to significant snowfall, with reports of up to eight inches in areas like Sheridan County. As of 11 a.m., snowfall records indicated that many regions in western Kansas have been affected, causing hazardous travel conditions.

In Russell, a citywide power outage occurred due to the severe weather, making restoration efforts nearly impossible in the morning hours. By early afternoon, conditions had improved somewhat, allowing utility crews to begin the slow process of restoring power. Some areas of the town are expected to remain without power until repairs can be completed.

Travel has been heavily impacted, with major road closures stretching from Salina to the Colorado state line. Although blizzard conditions began to subside by mid-Wednesday, powerful winds have persisted, creating ongoing challenges such as power outages and damage.

Wichita has also felt the effects of the storm, with wind gusts nearing 60 mph causing issues such as flying debris and uprooted trees. Residents reported downed trees impacting homes, highlighting the storm’s intensity as it hit the area.

Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve as Wednesday transitions into evening. Although temperatures have plummeted to the 30s and 40s, nearly 40 degrees lower than Tuesday, the forecast indicates a rebound into the 60s by Thursday, accompanied by mostly sunny skies.

Despite the chaos, many residents took to social media to share the scenic beauty of the snow across parts of Kansas, as winter wonderland scenes unfolded just before the official start of spring.
