A website called ‘Dogequest’ has ignited controversy by publishing the personal information of Tesla owners across the United States, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails. This service was launched amid protests against Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce government spending.
The site features an interactive map listing Tesla dealership locations and charging stations, as well as details of employees from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk oversees. The operators of ‘Dogequest’ have stated that they will only remove personal information about Tesla owners if proof of selling their electric vehicle is provided.
Adding to concerns, the website utilizes a Molotov cocktail image as its cursor, which critics argue could incite violence. The site has been tied to various incidents of vandalism targeting Tesla owners and dealerships, including recent reports of arson in Las Vegas where a suspect set multiple Tesla vehicles on fire.
Tesla owners, particularly those with the newly released Cybertruck, have reported facing verbal abuse and harassment as tensions escalate. The website claims neutrality but encourages ‘creative expressions of protest,’ which may further fuel harassment against Tesla drivers.
Following a surge in protests, Tesla’s stock price has dropped 6% and has plummeted by 53% since December 2024. Some investors are now calling for Musk to step down as CEO due to the negative impact on the company’s market performance.
As of now, the Justice Department has refrained from commenting on this situation. The act of doxing—sharing private information without consent—can lead to harassment and legal issues, although no specific federal law currently criminalizes such actions.
The growing backlash against Tesla and Musk is compounded by his controversial decisions at DOGE, which has included significant layoffs of federal workers. Officials are urging for action, with some calling for the FBI to investigate the cyber group responsible for the website.
With protests continuing and reputational damage mounting, even early investors are pressing for Musk’s resignation, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the impacts of his actions on Tesla’s market performance.
