Starling Marte Embraces New Role with the Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte is entering a new phase in his career. At 36 years old, he finds himself adapting to different responsibilities after enduring a challenging few seasons marked by injuries, including migraines and knee issues.

With the recent signing of Juan Soto for an unprecedented 15-year, $765 million deal, Marte’s role has evolved. However, Marte views this change as an opportunity for growth. “In this role, I get to help my teammates,” he said. “I get to be one more person who can watch and evaluate players on the field, and see how I can help them. And then, when I get the chance to play, I’m ready for that too.”

Manager Carlos Mendoza underlined the importance of Marte’s adaptability, stating, “It’s a different role but he wants to be here and we obviously want him here. Winning teams have players in that role who are elite players, and that is certainly the case here. He’s willing to do it and we need him, so I’m excited for him.”

Despite dealing with a persistent bone bruise on his right knee, Marte has remained engaged, participating in drills and practices alongside younger teammates. His leadership has not gone unnoticed. Center fielder Jose Siri praised Marte, stating, “He’s a tremendous person. If you’re not doing things the right way, he tells you to your face. Thankfully he hasn’t had to come to me yet. I’ve been trying to do things the right way and staying focused.”

As Marte recovers from his injury, he looks forward to a fulfilling season, performing in a role that may feature him as a designated hitter with opportunities for pinch running and time in the outfield. He remarked, “My knee feels good, thank God. Just getting better day after day.”
