Remembering Craig Wolfley: A Steelers Legend and Beloved Broadcaster

A Life Dedicated to Combat Sports

Craig Wolfley spent most of his adult life in the world of competitive sports, where he proved to be a formidable presence in football, boxing, sumo wrestling, martial arts, and competitive weight lifting. Known as a hand-to-hand warrior, Wolfley was a person who never backed down from a fight.

However, beyond the competitive spirit lay a kinder side. Off the field and away from the ring, Craig Wolfley was a gentle and supportive man, displaying loyalty and generosity toward friends and family.

The Loss of a Beloved Figure

Wolfley passed away on March 10, at the age of 66. In remembrance, Steelers President Art Rooney II stated, ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of Craig Wolfley, a beloved member of the Pittsburgh Steelers family.’ According to Rooney, Wolfley was an essential part of the team’s success during his 10 seasons as an offensive lineman, known for his grit and dedication.

After his retirement, Wolfley transitioned into broadcasting. He became a familiar voice for Steelers fans, providing insightful commentary and analysis on the Steelers Audio Network, where his humor and enthusiasm resonated with the community.

A Deep Bond with Tunch Ilkin

In the 1980 NFL Draft, Wolfley was selected in the fifth round and became a key player alongside Tunch Ilkin, with whom he formed a deep friendship. Their bond grew during broadcasts of ‘In the Locker Room with Tunch and Wolf’ on Steelers Nation Radio, where fans enjoyed their camaraderie.

Ilkin recalled their time together fondly, saying, ‘Training camp was always easy with Wolf every day… If we weren’t doing it together, I never would’ve done a five-days-a-week show.’ Their shared experiences on and off the field created a lasting friendship.

Inspiring Others in the Community

Wolfley did not only leave a mark on the field and in the booth but also in the hearts of those in his community. He actively participated in blood drives, fundraising walks, and entertained charitable gatherings, showcasing his genuine kindness.

Merril Hoge remarked, ‘He was truly one of those unique human beings… genuine, fair, and kind.’
