Tragic Loss: Rory Callum Sykes

An Australian man and former child star, Rory Callum Sykes, has died in the recent wildfires that have devastated California. His family has confirmed the heartbreaking news.

Sykes, 32, known for speaking publicly about his journey with disabilities including cerebral palsy, succumbed to the fires at his family’s Malibu home on January 8. His mother, Shelley Sykes, shared the sad news via social media, stating, ‘It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday.’ She expressed her heartbreak, describing him as a ‘wonderful son.’

The British-born Rory was born blind and had faced numerous challenges throughout his life. He had recently moved from Sydney, Australia, to the United States. At the time of his death, he was residing in a cottage on his family’s Malibu estate.

‘I couldn’t put out the cinders on his roof with a hose because the water was switched off,’ Shelley lamented. This revelation has raised concerns regarding the adequacy of firefighting resources available during this catastrophic event.

Even the 50 brave firefighters had no water all day.

Before his untimely passing, Rory had transformed his life from overcoming physical challenges to becoming an avid gamer, a philanthropist, and a humanitarian who founded ‘Happy Charity’ with his mother to assist those in need.

Shelley tearfully recounted her attempts to save her son during the fire, recalling, ‘He said, ‘Mom leave me’ and no mom can leave their kid. I’ve got a broken arm, I couldn’t lift him, I couldn’t move him.’ Sadly, fire officials later confirmed that Rory died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The ongoing wildfires surrounding Los Angeles have claimed at least 11 lives with reports suggesting that the numbers may rise. Rory’s death adds to this tragic toll.

The Australian government has offered consular assistance to Rory’s family in light of this tragedy, but further details remain private.
