Sonny Smart, the father of the University of Georgia’s head football coach Kirby Smart, passed away on Saturday following hip surgery.

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WTVY) – In a heartfelt statement, the University of Georgia announced the passing of Sonny Smart, who had undergone hip surgery after a fall in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve. Sonny had traveled to Louisiana to support his son’s team in the College Football Playoffs.
‘He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries,’ the school stated. ‘The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength and guidance.’
A Legacy in Coaching
Hailing from Columbia, Alabama, Sonny Smart was more than just a father; he was a respected high school coach, known for his dedication and thorough preparation. ‘He was a class act,’ recalled Harry Wayne Parrish, a fellow coach and rival. ‘He prepared our team better just by the way he approached coaching.’
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his sorrow as well, saying, ‘An incredible father and husband and a great coach in his own right, he was a constant presence at Georgia football games along with his wife Sharon. Sonny embodied the values and strength that we should all wish to have.’
Influence on Kirby Smart
Kirby Smart, now a prominent figure in college football, credits much of his coaching philosophy to the lessons learned from his father. ‘He’s taught me so much just about the way you handle things… The moment’s never too big if you’re prepared,’ Kirby shared ahead of the 2023 national championship game against TCU. ‘A lot of my core beliefs came from the way he ran our programs in high school.’
As tributes pour in, the legacy of Sonny Smart will continue to influence those he coached and the family he cherished. His dedication to the sport and his family will be remembered fondly by many.
